What are the ESD static standards?

2024-11-06

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) electrostatic standards are mainly used to regulate and guide various activities in static-sensitive environments to prevent static electricity from damaging electronic components, equipment, and systems. The following are some common ESD electrostatic standards:

1. International Standards

ANSI/ESD S20.20: This is an important ESD control standard issued by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It applies to the manufacturing, assembly, testing, and maintenance of electronic products, and provides detailed regulations on the establishment of electrostatic protection areas, personnel grounding, and the selection and use of electrostatic protection equipment.
IEC 61340: This is a series of standards on electrostatic protection issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard covers the generation, hazards, and protective measures of static electricity, and is applicable to the fields of electronics, electrical engineering, and communications.

2. Domestic Standards

GB/T 14288-2008 Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Combustible and Toxic Gas Detection and Alarm Systems: Although this standard is mainly for combustible and toxic gas detection and alarm systems, it also involves requirements for electrostatic protection. For example, detection and alarm equipment installed in hazardous areas should have anti-static functions.
SJ/T 10694-2006 "General Specification for Anti-static Testing of Electronic Product Manufacturing and Application Systems": This standard specifies the testing methods and requirements for electrostatic protection in electronic product manufacturing and application systems. It includes detailed provisions on the division of electrostatic protection areas, measurement of electrostatic potential, and testing of ground resistance.

3. Main contents of ESD static electricity standards

Division of ESD protection areas: According to the different levels of ESD sensitivity, the working area is divided into different ESD protection level areas. For example, areas with high ESD sensitivity can be divided into ESD key protection areas, and more stringent ESD protection measures can be taken.
Personnel grounding requirements: All personnel entering the electrostatic protection area should be grounded to prevent human static electricity from damaging electrostatic sensitive devices. Personnel grounding can be achieved by wearing anti-static wrist straps, anti-static shoes, etc.
Selection and use of electrostatic protection equipment: including the selection and use requirements of anti-static workbenches, anti-static floors, static eliminators, etc. These devices should have good electrical conductivity and be able to effectively conduct static electricity into the earth.
Static electricity detection and monitoring: Regularly conduct static electricity detection and monitoring in the static electricity protection area to ensure the effectiveness of static electricity protection measures. The detection content includes static electricity potential, grounding resistance, performance of static eliminator, etc.
Training and management: Provide ESD protection knowledge training to personnel engaged in ESD-sensitive work to improve their ESD protection awareness and operational skills. At the same time, establish a complete ESD protection management system to strengthen the management and supervision of ESD protection work.

In short, ESD static electricity standards are an important basis for ensuring the effectiveness of static electricity protection work. In practical applications, appropriate static electricity standards should be selected according to different industries and application scenarios, and static electricity protection work should be carried out strictly in accordance with the requirements of the standards.
